In a quiet but impactful update, Nomba (formerly Kudi) rolled out a firmware update to over 300,000 POS terminals nationwide, enabling seamless Apple Pay and Google Wallet support just in time for the festive season.
Why It Matters
Historically, "Tap to Pay" in Nigeria meant tapping a physical Verve or Mastercard.
- The Shift: This integration allows users (especially the "#IJGB" returnees and tourists) to pay using their phones, bypassing the need for physical cards or cash.
- The UX: It solves the "POS declined but debited" anxiety by using NFC (Near Field Communication) tokenization, which is significantly faster and more reliable than the old chip-and-pin method.
The Bigger Picture
This is the "soft infrastructure" that powers tourism. When a visitor can land in Lagos and buy Suya using the same Apple Pay wallet they use in London or New York, the friction of spending money disappears. And when friction disappears, the economy grows.
