After the Blackout: FG & Google in Talks for Equiano 2.0

31st December 2025 2 imizuzu yokufunda

Remember the internet blackout of early 2024? When a subsea cable cut left half of West Africa offline for days? The Federal Government is ensuring that never happens again.

The News

Reports from Bloomberg and Ecofin Agency this week confirm that the Nigerian government is in advanced talks with Google to deploy a second major subsea cable, effectively an "Equiano 2.0."

The "Redundancy" Plan

The first Equiano cable (launched 2022) was about capacity (speed). This new project is entirely about redundancy (reliability).

  • The Route: The discussions focus on a novel route that bypasses the traditional "choke points" in the Atlantic Ocean where underwater landslides are common.
  • The "Last Mile" Fix: It’s not just about the cable landing at the beach. The FG is pairing this with a $2 Billion fiber-optic backhaul investment to ensure that when the internet lands in Lagos, it actually gets to Kano, Kaduna, and Enugu.

Why Google?

Google (and Meta) are now the biggest investors in African infrastructure. They need Nigerians online to serve ads and sell AI subscriptions. For the Nigerian government, partnering with Big Tech offers a cheaper alternative to borrowing billions from China for infrastructure.

Verdict

This is a strategic win-win. Nigeria gets resilient internet; Google gets the next billion users.
