The Green Buses Are Coming: BasiGo Secures $42M to Fix Lagos Traffic

31st December 2025 1 nkeji ọgụgụ

While fintech usually grabs the headlines, the biggest check of December 2025 actually went to a company trying to fix your morning commute.

The News

BasiGo, the electric bus startup that originated in Kenya, has secured a massive $42 Million Series A equity round, unlocked by an additional debt facility from the US Development Finance Corporation.

The Mission

BasiGo is deploying this capital specifically to scale its operations in Lagos.

  • The Product: They aren't just selling buses; they operate a "Pay-As-You-Drive" model. Transport operators (Danfo/BRT owners) can lease the electric bus for a low upfront cost and pay a daily fee that covers the battery charging and maintenance.
  • The Logic: With petrol prices hovering around N1,200/liter in late 2025, electric buses have finally become cheaper to run than diesel/petrol alternatives.

Why Now?

The Lagos State Government has been under pressure to modernize its fleet and reduce emissions. BasiGo’s funding allows them to flood the BRT corridors with silent, clean buses.

My Take

Fintech disrupts how we pay; Clean Tech disrupts how we live. In 2026, the sound of Lagos might change from the roar of an exhaust pipe to the quiet hum of an electric motor.
