The Profitable Unicorn: Inside Moniepoint’s Massive $200M Series C Extension

31st December 2025 2 دقيقة قراءة

In a year where "down rounds" and valuation cuts were the norm for African startups, one Nigerian fintech has defied gravity. As of this quarter, Moniepoint has not only cemented its status as a Unicorn (valued at over $1 Billion) but has done something even rarer: it reached this milestone while being profitable.

The News

As confirmed in late October and solidified by December filings, Moniepoint has closed a massive Series C extension, bringing the total round to over $200 Million. The round was led by Development Partners International (DPI), with deep pockets from Google’s Africa Investment Fund and Verod Capital joining the cap table.

Why This Is A Big Deal

Most unicorns (think Jumia or the early days of Flutterwave) burned cash to grow. Moniepoint is different.

  • The Numbers: They are processing over $250 Billion in annualized transaction value.
  • The Pivot: They started as a backend for banks, then became the king of agency banking (POS). Now, in late 2025, they are aggressively pivoting to become a full-service digital bank for the everyday Nigerian, competing directly with GTBank and Zenith.

The "War Chest" Strategy

Why raise $200M when you are already profitable? According to CEO Tosin Eniolorunda, the capital is for M&A (Mergers and Acquisitions). With many smaller fintechs struggling to survive the economic reforms of 2025, Moniepoint is positioning itself to go on a shopping spree—buying up smaller lending and credit startups to build a "Super App" ecosystem.

My Take

Moniepoint is effectively becoming the "Chase Bank" of Nigeria’s digital age. If you are a traditional bank manager, this is the company that should keep you up at night in 2026.
